A few questions before the plunge?

Hi there everyone,

I’m a long time Joomla user just deciding whether or not to make the switch to EE. A few questions I must ask before I make my decision.

1. Are there extensions existing similar to Joomla’s Jomsocial community extension?

2. The thing I am most exited about is the simpler file structure of EE compared to Joomla, as a beginner developer (used to just design) is EE recommended as an easier beginning platform for developing?

3. I hear EE is built around the CodeIgniter framework, is CodeIgniter built in so my extensions can run off it?

These are my most pressing inquiries about EE. Since I will be developing I look forward to delving into the EE community. Thank you in advance!

-Cheers

Hey

Thank you for your interest in ExpressionEngine. I will do my best to answer your questions.

1. If I understand what Jomsocial Community is, then Devot:ee is probably what you are looking for.

2. I would say yes. The structure is very easy to follow and if you are a designer at heart, then ExpressionEngine is going to make a lot of sense to you.

3. You will need to make some changes but yes, going from CI to ExpressionEngine should be pretty smooth.

If there is anything else I can do to help?

Cheers,

Thank you that was very fast support indeed.
Just a few clarifications.

The way I understand it, Devot:ee is a host for different add-ons? Kinda like Joomla extensions? If so then which extension gives me the community functionality?

Also can I expect technical support on the changes I would have to make from CI to EE?

Thanks again for the speedy reply!

Hey AithinDesign,

Ah, so I do not understand the community thing for Joomla. There is no connection between Devot:ee and EE as far as community functionality. Sorry about that, misunderstood.

Technical support would not cover custom development for add-ons and such for going from CI to EE. But the community is huge and you would get support there. Does that make sense?

Thank you,

Ah I see, I will ask around some of the community forums see if they know of any extensions floating out there for community.

The community for EE is probably not as large as Joomla, but albeit has more actual developers working within it so I agree, I should be able to get good tech support there.

Thank you for the help!

Just one more Q:
How recently could I expect to see a new release I may need to pay for? If soon, should I just wait?

Hey AithinDesign,

Glad to help!

I do not know when the next release will be coming out. That information is not really made public anyway. grin
