Problem with Search in EE’s own support forum

I am reposting this issue that I mentioned at the bottom of another thread, in hopes it will get more notice. (http://ellislab.com/forums/viewreply/943059/).  After posting this item, several others mentioned they had the same problem as well.  I really rely on Search to find fixes to obscure problems!  I need it back!

My original post:

I don’t know if this has anything to do with your updates to the search queries for THIS website, but I’ve noticed lately that using search through this EE forum has been quite difficult as of late.  I normally can type in just about anything and get a lot of entries to read through, but in the last few weeks I keep getting “Your Search has returned no results”.  And for simple 3-word searches too.  For example, I typed “comments new entries” without the quotes in the regular search box, and got nothing.  Really?

And sometimes if I type something in the search box and hit enter, I am just taken to the Advanced Search page, where I have to type it in again.  Sometimes entering a search in Advanced Search just blanks out what I typed in and brings up the same Advanced Search page again.

Just wanted to make you aware.

As was linked to in the older posts, I have had this problem - tried replacing all the files and themes, and nothing worked.

Mine manifests in various ways - some searches only find older files (to a certain date). I really don’t have a good workaround….have programmed some variations on the simple and advanced searches, but the search is pretty bad still.

I have a google site search which obviously finds everything well.

OH, mine is EE 1.X - so either forget this post, or more likely consider if this particular bug or feature jumped from 1.x to 2.x

EE forums, up until very recently, have been 1.x - so, again, this thread may need moved to 1.x support…especially if the 2.x EE based versions seem to have fixed the problem.

oliversitedesign,

I’ve noticed some oddities as well. Particularly the redirect to the Advanced Search Form. I’ll tag our Devs in this thread to bring it to their attention. Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

Cheers,

oliversitedesign,

Are you still experiencing poor results when searching? If so, are they consistent with this bug report?

Obviously this is something we want to get solved. I ask only because I noticed some poor search results immediately after our own site’s switch to EE 2, but those have since subsided.

Hi, thanks for the reply!

Still having the same problem, and yes, I would say that my experience is consistent with the bug report you mentioned.  I tried all of the things he entered and got similar results, although occasionally I got an error that “The following errors were encountered-    * The action you have requested is invalid.”

It used to be that I could type a collection of words, and the Forum Search would return results with those words in it, but not necessarily that exact string.  For example, I just now tried typing “comments not allowed” (without quotes) in the search box, and was taken to the Advanced Search page right away (which did not retain my search string).  Tried it again from that page and got 2 results.  I can’t believe that in the entire search forum, there are only 2 posts with those words in them.  Does that mean that if the string in a post is “comments are not allowed” that Search isn’t finding it?

Another example of something I tried to search for recently was “allow comments multiple entries”.  I was trying to find a way to set the comments to allow for a batch of entries.  Normally typing in this string in the search box would pull up hundreds of entries with the most relevant at the top.  Maybe posts with that actual string would pull up first, followed by others that had some of the string.  But now I get no results.

Good luck, hoping you can fix this soon…

thanks for your help!

oliversitedesign,

I used your examples and got very similar results. We will bring this up internally with the Devs. Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

Cheers,

Any update on this? I have trouble searching for simple things that in the past I could get loads of results on. Now I get no results, and am guided to the advanced search page for now reason.

I get the same problem too with certain terms not bringing back any results where I know it should definitely come back with some.

As to being redirected to the Advanced Search Form I’ve only ever experienced this upon performing a search, getting no results and going back a page to search again and then being directed to it. I believe this is due to the XID being created for the search and it not being valid the next time around. More of a browser related issue that though.

Dan,

I may be missing something but that bug report seems specific to searching for code snippets within forum posts. The issue some are having (including me, often) pertains to any words within forum posts, not just code.

https://support.ellislab.com/bugs/detail/16618

This is a very troublesome issue since I rely hugely on these forums. Hope a fix is coming soon.

Thanks,
Ed

Dan gave me a nudge on this one- testing on my dev install, a search for g “comments not allowed” (without quotes) in the forum quick search is generating this query:

AND (title LIKE '%comments not allowed%' OR body LIKE '%comments not allowed%'

Ditto the advanced form with ‘Search for all words’ and ‘Any Words’.  Which is just- wrong and why I suspect things are off here.  Not totally confirmed on this site, but it’s running standard code.

Anyway- I’m going to move the main discussion and updating over to the bug report:
https://support.ellislab.com/bugs/detail/16618

But I did want to let you know we’re on it.  I’ll update there once I’ve tracked down why this is happening and have a fix for it.  And I’ll be sure to see what I can do about getting a patch in for our site as I know how critical the ability to search effectively is.

Make sense to all and any objections to moving discussion to the bug report?  Do comment there to subscribe and you’ll get notifications when I get a fix in.  Just figure it will be easier to find/keep track of there.

And to wrap this up, we’ve patched this site with a fix so all searches are not ‘exact match’.  That said, still investigating the linked bug a bit.  It fails when doing an exact search due to the search sanitization.  It always has, but we’re looking into whether that’s absolutely necessary.

Anyway- the search should be working normally now, we’ll get that fix into the next release, and I’ll report back anything else in the bug tracker!

Thanks for your patience on this one, folks!

Ah- I should have added it to the bug report, though it’s not actually the exact bug.  Added now- and it boils down to:
On system/expressionengine/modules/forum/mod.forum_core.php

Around line 9497

if (count($terms) == 0)
change to
if (count($terms_like) == 0

Around line 9791

if (count($terms) == 0)
change to
if (count($terms_like) == 0

That do the trick?
