If you come on the board and ask a question about JavaScript which is completely unrelated to CI it should be closed. Or moved to a separate forum called ‘General Coding’. This would allow more focus for CI users with genuine problems.

I don’t know what is funny about that. Today there was someone asking how to show a view file… answering this question won’t help them. What would help them is if they buggered off the forum and either read the docs or followed some tutorials.

I have been on this forum for like 10 days and the amount of questions where the jist is.. I don’t really know Codeigniter / PHP / JavaScript.. how do I do this… is ridiculous.

If a newbie programmer comes along and asks a really simple question and says “I have read this… I have tried this… I get this error… help! That’s cool. It shows they have made the effort and have got stuck. We have all been there at one point or another. These people need to be helped.

However too many questions are like this.

I don’t know what Google is. I can’t be bothered to read documentation. I don’t want to learn CI, I want to write an application. Now don’t teach me, just give me the code I need to solve this problem. I will then come back in 5 minutes with an almost identical problem.

The upshot of this is if you have a real problem which you are genuinely stuck on your thread is soon buried and is typically unanswered and soon buried.

and keeping the offshore copy/paste bidders out of the jobs forum so prospective employers wont run for the hills after looking at the canned “I do this for you” responses.

That second option would be nice!

Please make this spam crap go away.  I’m really getting tired of having to wade through it…in order to help people.

 
How about a “Three Strikes and Your OUT” button?

In a forum listing, hovering over the title of a thread gives… the title! It would be useful to show the first paragraph or so of the text, as in certain other forum softwares.

I think there are many things that could be done to make this forum more beneificial to not only those seeking guidance but to those that are kindly providing support as well.

For starters I think it would be beneficial if the forum introduced a versioning system that directly correlates with the version of codeigniter in use at the time of the discussion.  This way when people are seeking advice from the forum they can tell how out of date the discussion is and give them a better idea to them if the information is still relavent to the version they are working with.  However in order for this to work properly I think the code section should be split off into categories of interest.  This way when a person visits the category of interest they can see archived discussions from prior versions of codeigniter and at the top of the thread there will be a sticky post containing the release notes as to what has changed from prior versions of that category.  As a result the user will know what information is no longer relavent if they chose to go through the archives in that category and not discount the information because of its age alone.

Another idea is perhaps have a form that the user must fill out so as to indicate which category it belongs to, what solutions they have tried, errors they received and code examples.  I’m sure there could be more fields to add but the point is that it might deter people from posting before they read around.  It might also help wih reducing spam as it would be a lot more trouble for them to make random posts.

The other idea that has been mentioned is a rating system similar to what they have on stack overflow so you can see trusted users and provide “I found this helpful” feedback that will be put as credit towards the profile of the member who provided the solution.

There is a lot of information on this forum but I think structure and organization are essential, especially considering this community is constantly growing with more and more posts every day.

Better moderating of posts in the code! forum that are not CodeIgniter centric. At least 50% of the questions are about AJAX and basic PHP logic. We could offer more help to true developers of CI if we weren’t explaining var_dump(). We should all just paste a link to the devshed/mysql forums for non CI questions. They would learn more, faster in those forums.

Perhaps a quick reply toolbar for users with over x posts that has a selection list of canned responses like links to the devshed and mysql forums.

Some times it has an annoying filtering that filters out code,  and filters out < scripts tags, that is annoying,no other site does that, it is annoying

I have nothing against security,  and reasonable security is important but trading useability for excessive security can be counter productive forum wise

oh yeah and the spam shit is really annoying

Auto-delete(or hide from view) spam when/if thread/post is reported more than X no. of times.

That would reduce the moderators’ workload and clean up the forum. Knowing that one person can make a difference will also encourage users to be more pro-active in reporting spam.

Then it will be up to the thread owner to report to the moderators to prove that they aren’t spammers.

No doubt its tough question for fan of using codeigniter but still I would say that I would make more social connection with users at Facebook, twitter and help them from that place.

Second option I don’t know everything is fantastic hare in my eyes
