Quick response to threads, cos the forum is not newbie friendly at all. you post a thread and you get no replies. its frustrating

Deletion of spam or better moderation, for example:

Is this spam?

Is this spam, (yet again)?

1) A section like my thread would be very useful where instantly you find your all threads, answers etc. Its extremely useful.
2) Points and Awards accordingly. It makes people more involved and serious. Since it is a PHP Framework, a section like general php discusson might be included so more people will be attracted to CodeIgniter.

To bring it up again: Better spam-protection wink

And maybe a ‘jump to first unread post’-link like e.g. phpBB has one

I would like to see 3 things.

1) Better moderation. Spam should be zapped, more moderators should exist to help deal with it.

2) Less Friendly to newbie programmers. If you don’t know basic PHP you shouldn’t be using CodeIgniter. If you come on the board and ask a question about JavaScript which is completely unrelated to CI it should be closed. Or moved to a separate forum called ‘General Coding’. This would allow more focus for CI users with genuine problems.

3) A mark all threads read button in the latest posts screen.

Make everybody sign in blood that they have:
1) Read the User Guide
2) Tried on their own first and post problematic code
3) Show code wrapped in [c0de][/c0de] tags (no zero in code of course)

And I totally agree with the moderation.  These spam floods are ridiculous.  I quit reporting them because its a waste of time…no one does anything about it so why take the time to report it?

Oh,

2) Less Friendly to newbie programmers. If you don’t know basic PHP you shouldn’t be using CodeIgniter. If you come on the board and ask a question about JavaScript which is completely unrelated to CI it should be closed. Or moved to a separate forum called ‘General Coding’. LMAO.

I don’t know what is funny about that. Today there was someone asking how to show a view file… answering this question won’t help them. What would help them is if they buggered off the forum and either read the docs or followed some tutorials.

I have been on this forum for like 10 days and the amount of questions where the jist is.. I don’t really know Codeigniter / PHP / JavaScript.. how do I do this… is ridiculous.

If a newbie programmer comes along and asks a really simple question and says “I have read this… I have tried this… I get this error… help! That’s cool. It shows they have made the effort and have got stuck. We have all been there at one point or another. These people need to be helped.

However too many questions are like this.

I don’t know what Google is. I can’t be bothered to read documentation. I don’t want to learn CI, I want to write an application. Now don’t teach me, just give me the code I need to solve this problem. I will then come back in 5 minutes with an almost identical problem.

The upshot of this is if you have a real problem which you are genuinely stuck on your thread is soon buried and is typically unanswered and soon buried.

1) Moderators move posts to their appropriate section.

I also suggest 2 new sections of the forum:

1) Removing index.php from URL
2) Web Development Kindergarten

The first section is surely welcome if you’ve seen this question asked over and over again every single day. There’s gotta be close to 1000 threads on this topic.

The second section is for all the people that think they should use CodeIgniter without reading the manual or knowing any PHP, javascript, HTML, etc. If questions that should be in this section get posted in another section, they should be moved here by a moderator.

YES! It seems that there’s really been a surge in total web design newbies since about 6 months ago. I don’t know what happened, but its made the forum a mess.

I don’t know what is funny about that.

I thought it was particularly funny because that’s one of the main things that CI and the community are famous for; having a great community that actually tries to help people (unlike most others…Zend…Kohana…etc).

I also think CI opened the door for javascript/jQuery questions when they decided to, imo, waste time on a jQuery wrapper “library” and INCLUDED it in the framework.  That’s like using VB.NET to rewrite PHP.

I thought, the solution was really simple : IGNORE THEM! :D (well at least this works for me) Just answer questions which showing some effort from questioner, otherwise just ignore them.
