I would like to use a Live Look template for new entries on a website that has an approval system set up.  The original content is entered with a status of ‘pending’.  Once approved, the status is set to ‘Open’.

I am finding that I can’t view the content of a ‘pending’ entry.  EE does switch to the Live Look template.  ‘Open’ status entries view fine.

Any ideas?

It’s the same template that would display the piece of content on the front end.

Yes.  I created a duplicate of the template and added the ‘status’ param.  Works fine.
