So for a commercial license, the price difference $50 and account renwal fee for 1.x is #39.95 and the total equates to $89.95 where as the FAQ says 99.95. is it any calculation error?

Typo! Fixed.

Will there be a CORE version available?

They folks at EE have said NO, but if there was some massive tsunami of “give us core” then they would consider it.

Hello Leslie!

upgrade question in 2.x

So in the past, when EE went from 1.6.5 to 1.6.6 to 1.6.7 is was always free. Is this true for 2.x? For example, will 2.0.1 to 2.0.2 to 2.0.3 be free?

What about 2.1 to 2.2 to 2.3 ? It seems like we will have a choice to upgrade.

Thanks for everything - I can’t wait for the first.

Only two things I found strange and need clarification concern the Freelance edition…
1) Can’t convert a 1.x commercial to a Freelance - somewhat implies there will be more goodies. But if there are more I would think you’d want everyone of us to convert from our current Commercial editions.
2) Freelance will have a different feature set - could imply less as it’s cheaper kind of like 1.x Core+ or more.

I’ll definitely be keeping my ears tuned for more info on this.

Its #2. We’re aiming for a sweet spot that offers more than EE Core but is not the full version.

So the Freelancer version is only relevant to Web professionals who are new to EE and are not currently using it to power their portfolio sites.  Because those of us who are using it should already have a Commercial license and would upgrade to the full Commercial version for $50.  The Freelancer version would cost us more and offer us less.

Will there be a CORE version available?

EE Core 1.6.8 will remain available but there are no plans for an EE Core 2.0 at this time. There will be a free way to try the full version of EE 2.0 on your own web host. This is a bit of an experiment so we’ll see how it goes.

Hello Leslie!

We’re not sure if there will be standardized method to which versions are free upgrades and which are paid. It will mostly depend on what is being introduced in a new version. For example we expect that EE 2.1 will be full of bug fixes, optimization, and related items and that will for sure be a free upgrade.

We are committed to providing security updates for free for all versions. So, for example if there is a security update for EE 2.5, it would be back ported to EE 2.0, 2.1, etc… We don’t want to put people in a position where they have to pay to get a security fix for 2.x.

The main issue with the Download Account system is that it doesn’t give enough voice to the community. Its paying in advance for the unknown, which is counter to just about everything else we do. Those who liked it, loved it, those who hated it, really despised it.

Going to a traditional upgrade path gives you more control of how you spend your money and a very straightforward way to “vote” as it were for EE’s direction.

There is no ETA on 2.1, Bmovie. 2.0 isn’t even out yet. =)

The pricing is covered in the FAQ: How much will ExpressionEngine 2.0 RC cost?

The Personal license has been renamed Non-commercial in EE 2.0 so the upgrade path is Personal/Non-profit EE 1.x to Non-commercial EE 2.0 RC.
