freelance web designer seriously thinking of EE

I’m a freelance web designer, currently using WordPress as a cms I heard good stuff about EE and I’m seriously thinking of using it, I just would like to try it before start using it for good specially it costs money

so is it possible to get a trial version before the purchase?

Uploading Files Securely via Safecracker

Hi, Not sure this is truly a pre-sales question, but after some research I’m still not sure whether Safecracker is capable of the following:

My client needs a travel site where customers who register for her tours will need to upload fairly sensitive information: scans of their passports, visa applications, etc. These customers will self-register (might use ZooVisitor to manage these screens), get assigned to a “customer” member group, and be invited to fill out a form, visible only to logged-in users.

Assuming this is one large Safecracker form…

- Are Safecracker/EE “secure” in the sense that file uploads, if going over https, will be inaccessible after being uploaded? Does this require a file upload directory outside of the web root (and then is it even possible to use it as a Safecracker File upload destination?). It would seem inadequate to me if their uploads could be accessed at domain.com/files/joes-visa-application.pdf

- Does Safecracker handle file naming conflicts so that one “visa-application.pdf” doesn’t overwrite an existing file of the same name in that directory?

- I am a little intimidated by the plethora of SSL-related add-ons and forum discussions surrounding EE, Safecracker, and SSL. Is there a smarter way to handle this functionality?

Hi Folks,

I don’t normally bother with this but a couple of things I need to know.

1: I am currently building a Chinese website and would like to put it on EE, is there a Chinese language pack for the control panel and will the Channel Entries be able to handle the Chinese characters?

2: I am also in the process of putting a property website together, any suggestions for a good GeoLocation search plug-in or search by Postcode? Also is there anything you know of that will allow either EE to export .BLM files for RightMove or a way to parse .BLM files to populate EE entries?

Hi all,

I work as a web designer and developer, I currently specialise in developing sites for WordPress and Drupal. I’m using Drupal more and more these days, especially when e-commerce is required. Someone recently told me to check out ExpressionEngine and I must say it does look interesting. I would love to know if there is presently a stable, reliable and mature way of handling e-commerce on EE? Is there anything that is at all comparable with Ubercart and/or ‘e-commerce’ (the module) for Drupal?

Answers from someone with direct Drupal experience would be gladly received. The key things for me are reliability and stability. I’ve been stung in the past using e-commerce plugins for WordPress which just don’t cut the mustard - I spent half my time fixing other peoples bugs.

Evaluating EE for Commercial use

I’m an avid fan of CodeIgniter and I have projects on the horizon that I think could benefit from EE, but I would like to get my feet wet with an evaluation copy before I commit to recommending it to my clients.

Would it be possible for me to get an evaluation to play with so I can start recommending commercial licenses with confidence?

Evaluating EE for non profit

Hello,

I’m evaluating to see if we can move our current dreamweaver based website to EE. It is for a public school district. We have various elementary, middle, high schools and we need a site that will have links to each of these schools, which in turn will have their own websites. But all the schools will have a common look and feel with individual school logo, information etc. We also need to be able to give various kinds of users(teachers, library specialists etc) different access to be able to post content into these sites on their own without much technical knowledge.

—Is EE capable of handling this?
—Is it possible to set up different sections on the sites where users can post content(News, calendar, events etc.)?
—Is the front end easy enough for non technical users to be able to post content?
—How easy is it to set up a site like this?

Please help. Also, how can I take trial run of EE?

Got a client who would like a directory like yelp. I found a wordpress theme GeoTheme. But I wan to stay with EE.

customizing how EE outputs pages?

We have a pretty strange requirement for a CMS. We don’t want our CMS to actually serve up pages to the end user, but instead need it to build out the completed page to a specific directory, where we will then sync (FTP most likely) to our e-commerce server to integrate with our main ecom site. The main thing is that end-users will never see a page directly served up from the CMS.

So… can EE be customized to use something like template Caching (or Dynamic Page Caching) to build out all publishable pages so they can be served up by a different HTTP server? And… can this process be set to build on demand when needed or build on a schedule? In then end, we need EE to manage the content and build the pages, but then hand the files off to a different web server to get served up.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
